The University of the Free State (UFS) has a proud history as one of the oldest, most respected institutions of higher education in South Africa. It opened its doors in Bloemfontein in 1904 as the Grey University College, with six students in the Humanities. Today it is a multi-campus institution, with two diverse campuses in Bloemfontein and one in Qwaqwa in the scenic Eastern Free State, accommodating close to 40 000 students in its seven faculties, with an increasing number of international students and associates, and an ever-widening scope of active involvement in and contribution to its surrounding communities.

Job Title: Intern Chefs (Contract: 1 year, 5 positions)
Salary: R8,293.75 per month

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare meals to a high standard in various food outlets.
  • Assist with functions as needed and operate commercial cooking equipment.
  • Ensure proper storage and rotation of food supplies.
  • Follow recipes and maintain food presentation and portion control.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen.
  • Provide guidance to kitchen staff and assist with food deliveries and inventory.

Inherent Requirements:

  • Qualification in food preparation and cooking from a recognized culinary institution (National Vocational Certificate on NQF level 4).

Recommendations:

  • Knowledge of HACCP standards.

Required Competencies:

  • Results-oriented, strategic thinking, business acumen, leading, and building coalitions.
