A devastating crash occurred on the R21 northbound, just before the OR Tambo International Airport off-ramp in Gauteng, on Tuesday morning, leaving twelve people dead. The accident, which involved a bus, has led to a significant emergency response, with the scene still active as of the latest reports.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, reported that a bus jackknifed and rolled multiple times.
“We have accounted for 12 fatalities so far, all of them adults,” Ntladi said, confirming that the victims included nine men and three women.
In addition to the fatalities, other passengers have sustained injuries and have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Emergency personnel are currently on-site, and authorities have closed the roadway to all traffic. Ntladi indicated that further details would be provided once the scene is fully secured and the investigation progresses.
Recent Bus Crash Incidents
This latest tragedy is part of a worrying trend of fatal bus crashes in the past two weeks. A total of 19 lives have been lost in these crashes.
- On Sunday afternoon, nine churchgoers were killed when a bus traveling on the N2 between Richards Bay and Shaka’s Kraal crashed around 4 pm. The 82-seater bus, from Pontys Transport in Tongaat, reportedly lost control due to a tyre failure, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
- On March 5, 2025, ten people died in a crash on the N6, approximately 15 km south of Reddersburg, near Smithfield. The incident involved a City to City bus carrying 37 passengers that collided with a truck. The bus driver was critically injured in the crash.
