SAWS Issues Level 6 Weather Warning for KwaZulu-Natal

By | March 12, 2025

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has raised its weather warning for eThekwini and surrounding municipalities from Level 2 to Level 6, highlighting a significant threat of severe flooding and infrastructure damage. The warning is set to take effect from midnight on Thursday, 13 March, until midnight on Friday, 14 March.

The affected municipalities include eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mkhambathini, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, uMuziwabantu, and Umzumbe. This comes just two weeks after heavy floods ravaged parts of KwaZulu-Natal, leaving seven people dead and causing widespread destruction.

EThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana cautioned that the incoming storms would bring disruptive rainfall, significantly increasing the risk of localised flooding. “Models indicate a high likelihood of heavy rains over the eastern parts, where significant impacts can be expected,” Sisilana said.

Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel, as authorities warn of flooded roads, poor driving conditions, and potential destruction of homes—particularly mud-based structures. Emergency and disaster management teams are on standby to respond swiftly to incidents.

Just two weeks ago, deadly flash floods swept through the province, claiming seven lives. Five people drowned in Lamontville, while a mudslide in Chatsworth killed another, and a drowning was reported in Malangeni, uMdoni. Roads were submerged, and vital infrastructure suffered severe damage, further complicating recovery efforts.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as SAWS continues to monitor the situation. “This alert remains subject to change, and the SAWS will update the warning accordingly tomorrow, 12 March,” Sisilana confirmed.

Residents are strongly advised against attempting to cross rivers and streams during the downpour and to report emergencies immediately. Those in need of urgent assistance can contact the City’s emergency hotline at 031 322 4457.
