A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the violent ambush of a Limpopo couple who were returning from the bank with a significant sum of money.
In January 2024, the couple had withdrawn a large amount of money following a prior arrangement with a banking institution in Groblersdal town. As they were driving back home, they approached a speed hump in Sephaku village when the attack took place.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng explained that two masked suspects emerged from the roadside and fired multiple shots at the couple’s vehicle. The male victim was hit in the hip and right leg, while his fiancée was unharmed.
The robbers allegedly demanded the money, which the victim complied with before the suspects fled the scene on foot.
Local police arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and recovered three spent cartridges and two live rounds of ammunition. The injured victim was promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
Following a tip-off, the Limpopo Provincial Investigation Unit was able to locate one of the suspects. The man was arrested on Saturday night in Hlogotlou, where he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and nine live rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery with a firearm, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He appeared in court on Monday and was remanded in police custody.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the second suspect involved in the robbery.
