On Monday, four key witnesses, including a detective and community members, took the stand in the ongoing trial concerning the disappearance of Joshlin. The testimonies have provided critical insights into the events leading up to her disappearance.
Constable Refilwe Sekhobe’s Account
Constable Refilwe Sekhobe was among the first to testify. She shared details of the investigation, including her initial involvement after receiving a call about the missing child. Sekhobe and her partner, Sergeant Meyer Milstein, arrived at Kelly and Boeta’s home in Morreesburg, where they found other officers conducting interviews.
Sekhobe’s testimony revealed that Laurentia Lombaard, who is now a state witness, had been using drugs with the couple on the day Joshlin went missing. After interviewing Lombaard, Sekhobe learned that Steveno van Rhyn had also been present at the scene.

Crucial Lead and Allegations
Sekhobe also described a visit to Steveno van Rhyn’s home on 22 February, where she encountered a crowd of community members confronting him.
“I met Mr Van Rhyn at his residence. He confirmed that he was at Smith and Appollis’ home on the day Joshlin went missing,” Sekhobe told the court. “He initially claimed that Laurentia left with Joshlin and later returned alone, but later admitted he hadn’t actually witnessed this.”
Van Rhyn appeared emotionally unstable but provided a lead. He alleged that Laurentia’s boyfriend, Ayanda, may have sold Joshlin to a local sangoma.
Community Insights from Other Witnesses
Several other witnesses took the stand, offering further details about the case:
- Namhla Tinzi, Kelly’s neighbour, recounted the community’s shock and reaction after Joshlin’s disappearance was revealed.
- Carlien Zeegers, Kelly’s former employer, testified that Kelly was a good mother who faced significant challenges.
- Natasha Andrews, a family friend, revealed that she had once hoped to adopt Joshlin, but the adoption process ultimately fell through.
