Joshlin Smith’s Mother Refused Shelter for Political Trip, Social Worker Reveals

By | March 12, 2025

The disappearance of Joshlin Smith, a six-year-old girl who went missing from her Middelpos home on 19 February 2024, continues to unravel in the Western Cape Circuit High Court in Saldanha Bay. A social worker involved in the case testified this week, revealing unsettling details about the child’s mother, Kelly Smith, and her actions leading up to the disappearance.

A Child’s Absence from School

On Wednesday, social worker Siliziwe Mbambo shared critical details regarding the day Joshlin vanished. According to Mbambo’s testimony, Smith explained that Joshlin had stayed home from school the day she disappeared because her school uniform was dirty, and they lacked soap to wash it. This testimony highlights the difficult living conditions the Smith family was facing.

Kelly Smith’s Struggles with Drug Use

The case took a deeper turn when Mbambo testified that Smith had been struggling with drug use for an extended period. In her testimony on Tuesday, Mbambo also confirmed that Smith had previously undergone rehab but had relapsed before Joshlin’s disappearance.

Despite these challenges, Smith appeared visibly shaken and emotional when Mbambo finally tracked her down at her employer, Kelly Zeegers’ house, after trying to reach her for two days.

Refused Shelter for Political Trip

On 28 February, the Department of Social Development offered Smith a place in a shelter, hoping it would provide a safe environment for her and her children. However, Smith turned down the offer. Instead, she opted for a trip to Cape Town sponsored by a political party to “destress” with her children. This choice raised eyebrows as it delayed her potential access to shelter and support.

When Smith returned to Saldanha Bay, she was presented with the shelter’s rules, including restrictions on cellphone use and visitors. According to Mbambo, Smith refused to stay at the shelter, insisting that she needed to continue searching for her missing daughter.

“I asked her to put that in writing,” Mbambo stated in court.

Smith’s Family Situation

As for Smith’s other children, Mbambo confirmed that Racquen was with Smith’s grandmother, and Rachelle stayed with her paternal relatives. The social worker’s testimony painted a picture of a family in turmoil, struggling with multiple challenges.

Accusations of Kidnapping and Human Trafficking

The trial has taken a darker turn, with Kelly Smith, Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn now facing charges of kidnapping and human trafficking related to Joshlin’s disappearance. As the investigation continues, authorities are piecing together the details of this harrowing case, with the trial still unfolding in Saldanha Bay.

As the case progresses, the court’s testimony and evidence may reveal further details of the circumstances surrounding Joshlin’s disappearance and the possible involvement of those closest to her. Stay tuned for updates as the trial continues.
