The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is offering bursaries to South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds, specifically for undergraduate studies in mining and energy-related fields. These fields include engineering, environmental health, geology, ICT, and more.
Fields of Study:
The bursary is available for the following fields:
- Bachelor of Science (Physics and Chemistry)
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
- Electro-Mechanical Engineering
- Environmental Health and Management
- Geology
- Industrial Engineering
- Information and Communication Technology
- Materials Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive)
- Mining Engineering
- Mining Survey
- Nuclear Engineering
- Rock Engineering
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be 35 years or younger.
- Currently in Matric or have completed Matric.
- Achieve a minimum of level 6 for pure Mathematics and Science in Matric.
- Intend to study full-time in one of the listed fields at a South African University or University of Technology.
- Be in financial need and from a disadvantaged social background (preferably rural areas).
- Be unemployed.
- Preference: First-year students, female students, and students with disabilities.

- Download and complete the DMRE Bursary Application Form 2025 (.pdf)
Required Supporting Documents:
- Certified copy of ID document.
- Certified copy of Matric certificate or latest Matric results.
- Certified copy of latest academic transcript (if currently studying).
- Proof of tertiary registration or acceptance (on institution’s letterhead).
- Certified copies of parents/guardians’ ID documents.
- Certified copy of parents’ death certificate, if applicable.
- Affidavit if you don’t know where one or both parents are.
- Proof of parents/guardians’ income (payslips, if employed; affidavit if unemployed).
- Proof of residence (municipal bill or affidavit not older than 3 months).
- Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary.
Note: If you’re in Matric, submit your final results and acceptance letters within the first week after results are released.
