Cheslin Kolbe admitted he never expected to be crowned South African Rugby Player of the Year, especially given the competition from heavyweights like Pieter-Steph du Toit, reigning World Rugby Player of the Year, Springbok centurion Eben Etzebeth, and standout inside centre Damian de Allende.
But on Thursday evening in Cape Town, the electrifying winger edged out his Springbok teammates to claim the prestigious 2024 award, cementing his place among South Africa’s rugby greats.
Kolbe Joins Elite Company
Kolbe is the first backline player to win the award since Jean de Villiers in 2013, following a stellar season with the Springboks. Speaking after the announcement, the speedster admitted the achievement still feels surreal.
“Growing up and seeing all the players who have lifted this award has motivated me to one day do the same,” Kolbe said in a video interview.
Due to his club commitments in Japan, Kolbe was unable to attend the awards ceremony in Cape Town, and his father, Andrew Kolbe, accepted the trophy on his behalf.

A Team Effort Behind Kolbe’s Success
While humbled by the recognition, Kolbe was quick to credit his teammates and coaches for their support throughout 2024.
“Yes, my name will be on it, but 2024 was a team effort. I want to thank the coaches and my teammates for believing in me and allowing me to represent my country,” he said.
“You don’t play for accolades, and it’s never a one-man show. The team comes first. But getting these nominations helps boost your confidence.
“For me, it’s about being a better player in 2025 than I was last season.”

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Test Season
Kolbe played a crucial role in the Springboks’ impressive 85% win record in 2024. Looking ahead, South Africa is set for a blockbuster 2025 season, with 15 scheduled Test matches, plus a warm-up game against the Barbarians.
With Kolbe performing well in Japan, he hopes his form will earn him another call-up to the national squad. Given his impact last year, it’s hard to see him being left out.
Reflecting on his journey with the Springboks since 2018, Kolbe acknowledged the team’s incredible success, including two Rugby World Cup titles, the Rugby Championship, and the Freedom Cup after defeating the All Blacks twice in 2024.
“It’s going to be an exciting 2025 Test season. Those matches in South Africa will be massive. The atmosphere and energy last year were unbelievable—everyone comes out to support the Springboks.
“We must ensure we bring the same excitement to the field as our supporters bring to the stands.”
